Hurricane Sandy
October 28th, 2012
I am watching this with interest, the United States are getting prepared for the worse with Meteorologists predicting a “Frankenstorm” (referenced to the fact that Halloween falls on Wednesday) as it merges with a separate winter storm. A lot of media reports from the USA seem to be hyped up and it could be that sensationalism is driving hysteria with people emptying the shelves of local stores for the stock piling of essentials. But the intensity of the storm is not the key here it’s sheer size, with close to hurricane force winds it could be 300 miles across by the time it makes landfall tomorrow and affect 60 million people! Not only high winds are of concern, a storm surge could cause coastal flooding coupled with the possibility of up to 10″ of rain and 2 foot of snowfall affecting 12 states as it merges with an Arctic jet stream, forecasters said Sandy has all the ingredients to transform into a “super storm” unlike anything seen over the eastern United States in decades. So it may appear the preparations under way are not such a typical American over-reaction but a well justified precautionary measure, time will tell.
